The Village of Cottage Grove Police Department and the Deer Grove EMS have partnered with local merchants to reward children for wearing helmets by providing them with coupons for free cones, cookies, sports drinks, and donuts when the police or EMS personnel observe children riding their bikes with helmets on their heads. The “Caught Wearing a Helmet” program encourages children to be caught by the police/ems wearing their helmets and is one more way to encourage this practice in children to keep them safe while riding their bikes. The police also provide safety tips to the children and their parents while making these contacts to remind children how to keep safe this summer.
The program will continue throughout the summer as long as the coupons last. Many children have already received coupons and are very excited when they see a police car hoping to receive another free coupon. The following merchants have very generously agreed to provide these coupons to our department free of charge to help encourage this very important safety practice of our children;
